Anthropic Backers Bank Billions Ahead of Historic Listing
Early and late-stage investors are poised for massive windfalls as the AI lab prepares for a public offering that could value the company at $2 trillion.

The anticipated public listing of Anthropic, the leading artificial intelligence laboratory, is set to transform its investor base into a cohort of multi-billionaires before the first trade even hits the exchange. While the company’s debut on public markets is expected later this year with a valuation that could reach as high as $2 trillion, the financial stakes for its earliest supporters are already monumental. Even at the company’s most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the positions held by various venture capital firms and individual backers already aggregate to billions of dollars, according to data from Bloomberg.
The sheer scale of these holdings underscores the rapid appreciation in value that has characterized the AI sector. For those who entered the ecosystem during the startup’s infancy, the growth has been exponential, while those who joined at later stages have seen their substantial capital injections yield significant returns. The disparity in entry points highlights the diverse risk profiles and timing strategies that have defined the company’s funding history.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google, exemplifies the potential of early entry. He participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, a period when PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at just $461 million. Today, Schmidt retains approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, his stake is worth nearly $10 billion, a figure that will likely expand further if the IPO materializes at the projected upper end of its valuation range.
Iconiq Capital represents the other end of the spectrum, having made a massive late-stage bet on the firm. The investment outfit wrote a check for $6 billion last year, at a time when Anthropic was already valued at $183 billion. That significant commitment is now valued at $17 billion. If the company achieves the higher valuation estimates during its public offering, Iconiq’s position has the potential to double, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward nature of such late-stage entries.
Menlo Ventures has been a long-term supporter, leading the company’s Series D financing. Over the course of its involvement, the venture capital firm has injected more than $1 billion into Anthropic. That cumulative investment has grown into a stake currently valued at $14 billion, cementing Menlo’s position as one of the most significant financial backers in the AI lab’s history.
Sequoia, a prominent name in venture capital, entered the picture more recently, backing the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At that time, the company’s valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment secured it roughly 1% ownership. Despite the high entry price, the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment, a testament to the continued momentum in Anthropic’s valuation.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also seen substantial growth in its holdings. The firm invested $35 million in Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round and subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. These combined investments have resulted in a stake now worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to possess a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, which valued the company at $5 billion. That modest entry point has ballooned more than ninetyfold, with the position now valued at $7 billion. This trajectory illustrates how early, even if not the earliest, participation can yield extraordinary returns in the current AI market landscape.
As the clock ticks down toward the expected IPO, these figures serve as a preview of the wealth creation to come. For the Pacific Northwest and investors nationwide, the listing represents not just a corporate milestone, but a tangible realization of the financial bets placed in the nascent stages of one of the world’s most influential technology companies. The stakes are high, the valuations are historic, and the market is watching closely.
